Join your Filipino Young Professionals Cultural Ambassadors of Houston (@FYPCA.HTX) for a fun-filled afternoon of "Kadtendong" and "Kadtubaw!"

The FYP Cultural Ambassadors always strive to represent and uplift the different cultural regions of the Philippines! In light of this mission, we’re proud to present “Kadtubaw and Kadtendong”, a flowing, vibrant dance involving colorful headwraps that was inspired by the Maguindanao people of the Philippines.

The Maguindanao people, known as the "people of the flood plains," live in the basin of the Pulangi River in Mindanao, the southernmost island of the Philippines, and are known for their rich history of weaving. This dance showcases the community’s preparation for religious celebrations through showcasing how to wear the attire in a variety of ways: the “tendong”, or the women’s head scarf/shawl and the “tubaw”, the men’s kerchief.

This choreography is by Eric Solano of Parangal Dance Company, in collaboration with Salamindanao Dance Company, Cotabato City, and culture bearer Faisal Monal.

Whether you're a seasoned dancer or a curious beginner, this workshop promises to be an enriching experience! Come learn the different ways the "tendong" and the "tubaw" is tied, admire the rich and colorful attire used during this dance, and appreciate the beauty and history of the Maguindanao people with us on August 11th!

Best of all it’s FREE, and no experience is necessary! YES, absolutely, and we mean everyone of all experience levels from complete beginner to expert dancer! And you don't have to be Filipino to participate either, we want to promote a diverse environment and ensure attendees are able to find a deep understanding and appreciation of a cultural ethnic dance of the Philippines!

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:

❓️What exactly is Kadtendong and Kadtubaw?

This dance showcases the community’s preparation for religious celebrations through showcasing how to wear the attire in a variety of ways: the “tendong”, or the women’s head scarf/shawl and the “tubaw”, the men’s kerchief.

❓️Can anyone join?

YES, absolutely, and we mean everyone of all experience levels from complete beginner to expert jumper, and you don’t have to be Filipino to participate either! We want to promote a diverse environment and ensure attendees are able to find a deeper understanding and appreciation of our beloved Filipino dance!

❓️What should I wear?

Comfortable clothes are recommended! Our dancers usually prefer to dance barefoot for safety and stability (please, no socks to prevent slipping!) but we can accommodate you if you would rather dance in some tennis or dance shoes. Also to our long-haired friends, a scrunchie or hair-tie will go a long way, trust us!

❓️Anything else I should bring to the workshop?

Just yourself and a willingness to learn! Water and drinks will be provided at the workshop, but try to eat something light before attending since we’ll be moving and we want to make sure everyone is fully hydrated and energized! Emphasis on “light meal” - save the pancit and lumpia for after! ;)
